About the Cause

Posted by TH0281 in Thailand on 04/22/2026

In our community, traditional Karen weaving is slowly disappearing. Older generations still carry the knowledge, but fewer young people are learning these skills as modern fabrics become more common and daily life changes. At the same time, many families are facing financial pressure and do not have stable income opportunities within the village. If this is addressed, children and youth will be able to learn and carry forward the cultural identity of their community, while families gain practical ways to earn income from home. This will help preserve important traditions while also strengthening daily life through local economic activity. To respond to this, our church wants to expand a weaving program that teaches children and youth traditional techniques, patterns, and meanings while also developing products such as clothing, bags, and other items that can be sold. We will encourage the use of local materials and natural dyes, while also helping participants understand how to work together, share knowledge, and create products that reflect both tradition and value. Through this, we want to build a space where culture is not only remembered, but actively lived, passed on, and used to support families in practical ways.

How the church will sustain the Cause

Our work is designed to grow as a living system within the community, where knowledge, income, and participation continue to build on each other over time. As more children and youth learn weaving, they will begin to carry these skills forward and teach others, creating a natural cycle of learning across generations. Experienced members will guide new learners, while shared activities like group weaving and local events will keep the practice active and visible. At the same time, woven products will continue to create income that can be reinvested into materials, tools, and small group production, allowing the work to sustain itself without relying only on outside support. As skills grow, the community can gradually develop its own identity through unique patterns and products, strengthening both value and recognition. This combination of skill transfer, shared ownership, and local income will allow weaving to remain not just an activity, but a lasting part of community life that supports both culture and economic stability.
