About the Cause
Posted by TH0962 in Thailand on 03/30/2026
In our community, families depend on natural water sources for daily life. But these sources have become less reliable over time. The main reason is upstream. Forest areas that once helped store and filter water have been reduced. When trees are gone, rainwater runs off too quickly instead of soaking into the ground. This leads to less water being held in the system and more dirt flowing into streams. As a result, water becomes both limited and unsafe. Children are affected the most. When water is unclean or inconsistent, it impacts their health and their ability to stay engaged in school. Families also face added pressure trying to find safe water or deal with related illnesses. We want to address the root of the problem by restoring the watershed. We have started this work, but need more help to complete it in a meaningful way that will make this difference. Our work would include replanting trees in upstream areas so the land can hold water again. We would also build small check dams using local materials to slow down water flow and increase absorption into the soil. Our goal is to prevent soil erosion to keep water sources clean, and protect natural springs and streams from damage. Alongside this, we will involve the community directly. People will take part in caring for the watershed and learn how these systems work. Children and youth will be included so they understand the connection between forests and water from an early age. Our goal is for natural water sources to become stable and clean throughout the year. When that happens, it will reduce pressure on families and improve their health.

How the church will sustain the Cause
This work will continue because it is built around what the community can manage on their own. A simple community fund will support ongoing care, such as repairing check dams and maintaining water pathways. Contributions will be small and supported by local activities, making it realistic for families to participate. A local committee will oversee the fund so it remains transparent. The community will also agree on shared rules for protecting the upstream forest. These will guide how the land is used and help prevent actions that damage water sources. Responsibility will be shared, and when issues arise, people will address them together. Children and youth will continue to be involved, learning how the system works and taking part in its care. This helps ensure the work continues even as leadership changes over time. The use of local materials and existing knowledge keeps costs low and reduces dependence on outside support. As water becomes more stable, the benefit will be clear in daily life. That visible result is what will keep people engaged and willing to continue the work. Over time, small income activities connected to a healthy forest can also contribute to maintaining the watershed, helping the system support itself.
