I will never forget my first visit to this church on the edge of the community. As I arrived, I was greeted by the joyful sounds of children laughing and playing together in the sunshine. Others were busy participating in church activities. Seeing their smiles filled my heart with hope.
But then I noticed a little girl named Nam standing quietly near an old restroom. Tears welled up in her eyes as she shifted nervously from one foot to the other. When I gently asked why she wasn't using the toilet, she pointed toward a small, worn corrugated iron structure behind the church.
I opened the door and my heart sank.
Inside was darkness. A strong musty odor filled the air. The toilet was broken, the floor was damp and slippery, and the door would not close properly. Cracks in the walls left almost no privacy. As I stood there, I tried to imagine what it must feel like to be a child and have no choice but to use this restroom every day.
