After preparing the equipment, we proceeded with the following steps: Natural Cotton Dyeing Process 1. Collect color-producing plants and barks from the community forest, such as turmeric, indigo, fig bark, and rosewood. 2. Prepare the raw cotton by washing and removing any oil or starch coating. 3. Extract the color from the plants and barks by crushing and boiling them until the color is extracted. 4. Create a bond to make the color last longer by adding rust water, alum, or lime water to the cotton and boiling it. 5. Dip the cotton threads into the boiling mixture and boil for 60 minutes until the desired dark color is achieved. Remove the threads, rinse with clean water, and sun-dry completely. 6. Weave the completely dried cotton using a backstrap loom or a handloom according to the desired length and pattern. 7. Once the desired fabric is obtained, transform it into bags, pillowcases, and tablecloths. The intricate craftsmanship of hand-weaving and natural dyeing is then seamlessly integrated into the daily lives of the modern generation. These pieces tell a story of environmentally friendly natural dyeing and offer a unique texture that cannot be replicated by machines.

WHY IT MATTERS

Inspiration from the Community

In a small community still surrounded by rice fields and forests, lives "Aunt Somporn," a quiet but always smiling weaver. Aunt Somporn is a member of the community who still uses traditional weaving and natural dyeing techniques, such as using padauk bark to create a reddish-brown tone or butterfly pea flowers to create a deep blue. Every time she weaves, Aunt Somporn recounts stories of her childhood learning to dye cloth from her mother, always saying, "Nature gives us everything if we learn to use it without harming it."

However, today, the younger generation in the community is less interested in this craft. Most children are accustomed to ready-made clothes and factory-made colors. They have little idea that the beautiful colors on cloth can be created from tree bark or flowers around their homes. Aunt Somporn has become both an inspiration and a concern for us—if no one inherits her knowledge, this wisdom could disappear along with her generation.

This is why we decided to create the "Natural Lines of Weaving Cloth for Children and Youth" activity, allowing children to experience, learn, and take pride in the community's wisdom through experimenting with dyeing and weaving cloth themselves.
